Christopher Columbus: The Discovery
Synopsis
Christopher Columbus has a dream of reaching the Indies by sailing west instead of east. Turned down for backing in Portugal, he wins the support of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, then sets sail with three ships and faces sabotage and rebellion along the way.
The Citadel sequence is short but easy to place if you know Victoria. Columbus comes down through the streets after a visit to the market, is jumped by an assailant and throws the man clean over the wall into the square below. It was shot inside the Victoria Citadel, whose stepped limestone lanes and Cathedral Square needed no set dressing to pass for a period European town.
Gozo was one stop of many. On mainland Malta the production used Mediterranean Film Studios in Kalkara, and it filmed further afield in Spain and Portugal. The voyage and New World scenes were shot across the Atlantic, with the landfall filmed in the US Virgin Islands.
