Popeye

Popeye arrives in the town of Sweethaven as part of his search for Pappy, the father that abandoned him when he was only two years old. Everyone in the town is suspicious of him, except Wimpy who likes anyone who buys him a hamburger. Olive Oyl also comes round to liking the sailor man and they fall in love when the discover and decided to raise an abandoned baby boy together. Named Swee’pea in honour of the town, Olive’s former fiancé, Bluto, uses the infant to try and win her back.

Critically panned but a Box Office hit, Popeye signalled the end of the director Robert Altman’s Hollywood career. However, it firmly put Malta on the international filmmaking map, with the set of Sweethaven, now known as Popeye Village, still being a major tourist attraction
