Synopsis
Set against the sun-drenched backdrop of a Greek island, Two Weeks in August is a witty, sharply observed and gloriously uncomfortable eight-part drama about what happens when a group of friends reunite for a summer holiday and discover rather more about themselves and each other than they bargained for.
Jessica Raine plays Zoe, a woman hoping to rediscover joy on holiday with her family and friends. But here in paradise, what starts with an illicit kiss quickly turns the dream holiday into a nightmare. As Zoe begins to act on her deepest desires, the holiday she had hoped for becomes a reckoning for a group of adults who refuse to grow up. When the group discover they are trapped on the island and faced with real life-or-death situations, they begin to turn on each other. Is Zoe responsible for the drama and destruction around her, or are bigger forces at play?
Written and created by Catherine Shepherd (Sally4Ever, The Shrink Next Door) and produced by the multi-award-winning Various Artists Limited, the team behind I May Destroy You and Such Brave Girls, Two Weeks in August was commissioned by BBC One and will be available on BBC iPlayer.
Despite being set in Greece, the series was filmed in Malta and Gozo, with local production company Pellikola. Gozo’s dramatic coastline and sun-bleached landscapes make a convincing and beautiful stand-in for the Greek islands, and keen-eyed viewers will recognise several of the island’s most iconic locations.

Two Weeks in August Scenes on Gozo
Where Was Two Weeks in August Filmed on Gozo?
Two Weeks in August filmed across Malta and Gozo, with Gozo’s coastline providing some of the most visually striking sequences in the series.
Dwejra Bay, San Lawrenz Dwejra Bay, one of Gozo’s most dramatic coastal locations, features in the series. The bay’s sheer limestone cliffs, the distinctive Fungus Rock islet and the crystal-clear waters of the Inland Sea have been used in numerous productions over the decades, and the landscape translates convincingly as a remote Greek island setting.
Mġarr ix-Xini The secluded inlet of Mġarr ix-Xini, a narrow valley on Gozo’s south coast that opens onto a sheltered bay, also features in the production. One of Gozo’s most beautiful and least developed coastal spots, Mġarr ix-Xini has appeared in several productions, most notably By the Sea (2015), filmed here by Angelina Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt.
Top Tip: Both locations are accessible by car and well worth visiting. Mġarr ix-Xini is a short drive from Sannat and has a small shingle beach at the end of the valley. Dwejra Bay is near the village of San Lawrenz on Gozo’s western coast.
