Revenge is a dish best served on Comino

La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo

La Comtesse de Monte Cristo
Crystal clear blue waters, a limestone cliff with a cave.

Alexandre Dumas’s classic tale of revenge and redemption is getting a bold feminist reimagining and once again, the waters around Comino are playing a starring role.

La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo is an eight-part French mini-series starring and co-produced by Audrey Fleurot, best known to French audiences as Morgane Alvaro in the hit series HPI. Fleurot plays Mercédès Herrera, a heroine in 1815 Marseille who sets out to take revenge on those who destroyed her lif, including her own cousin Fernand, manipulative schemer Danglars, and the implacable Héloïse de Villefort.

The series is directed by Djibril Glissant and Leonardo D’Antoni, and is backed by TF1 in association with Netflix, meaning it will reach a global audience upon release.

Filming is currently taking place in Malta and the Czech Republic. A Transport for Malta filming notice has confirmed that the production is using the same Comino cave location that featured in both the 2002 film and the 2024 TV series — continuing a remarkable tradition of Monte Cristo productions returning to the same waters around Comino across more than two decades.

We will update this page with full filming location details as soon as the series airs.

La Comtesse de Monte-Cristo is the fifth production based on Alexandre Dumas’s classic novel to film in Malta and Comino, spanning four decades of filmmakers returning to the same extraordinary waters. The Comino cave used in filming this production sits below Santa Marija Tower — the very tower that doubled as Château d’If in the 2002 film starring Jim Caviezel and also appeared in the 2024 TV series starring Sam Claflin.
