The Count of Monte Cristo

Synopsis
One of the most beloved stories in French literature gets a spectacular big-screen treatment in this 2024 adaptation directed by Alexandre de La Patellière and Matthieu Delaporte. At 178 minutes, it is a film that takes its time and revels in every moment, and audiences loved it, making it one of the biggest French productions in years.
Pierre Niney stars as Edmond Dantès, the young sailor wrongly imprisoned in the forbidding Château d’If after being betrayed by those closest to him. Years later, transformed and armed with a vast fortune, he returns to Paris society under the alias of the Count of Monte Cristo; a man of mystery, wealth and cold, patient revenge.
Anaïs Demoustier plays Mercédès, the woman Edmond loved and lost. Bastien Bouillon is the treacherous Fernand. And Pierfrancesco Favino brings warmth and wisdom to the Abbé Faria, the imprisoned priest who becomes Edmond’s unlikely mentor and friend.
Originally released in France in June 2024 under the title Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, the film received its worldwide release on 20 December 2024 and has since found a global audience hungry for the full, uncompromising version of Dumas’s masterpiece.
Filming took place in Malta, continuing a remarkable tradition of Monte Cristo productions returning to the islands of Malta and Comino that stretches back across four decades. We are currently researching the specific Comino filming locations and will update this page with full details as soon as they are confirmed.
