Things to Do in Għarb

Don’t be fooled by its quiet appearance. There’s plenty to keep you entertained if you decide to stay or visit Għarb.

• Ta’ Pinu Basilica: the National Shrine is a truly stunning building and really is a must-visit. Featuring beautiful architecture and panoramic views of the countryside, it is an easy and enjoyable walk from Għarb village centre.
  
  
• Għarb Folklore Museum: Step back in time and explore Gozitan rural life through fascinating exhibits giving a glimpse into the past. (Temporarily closed).
  
  
• Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village:  One of our favourite places to visit on all of Gozo. Originally built to house the British military, it is now home to local artisans in a variety of workshops and it’s easy to pass an hour so watching these skilled crafts people create glass and metalware, leather goods, jewellery and all sorts of other goods.
  
  
• Wied il-Mielaħ Window: Take a scenic walk to this natural rock formation.

Visiting the Madame Blanc Mysteries Filming Locations in Għarb

Fans of the show will recognise Għarb’s charming village square, which doubles as the fictional French village of Sainte Victoire. Keep an eye out for the exterior of La Couronne and the exterior of the Sainte Victoire Police Station!

The Church of the Visitation Għarb’s parish church is one of the most recognisable backdrops in the whole series. It looms beautifully behind every scene set outside La Couronne and the police station, giving Sainte Victoire its distinctly southern European feel. Beyond being scenery, the church has been the setting for some of Jean and Dom’s most significant moments, including their first proper row and a momentous decision at the end of Season 3.

La Couronne Before it became everyone’s favourite fictional bar, this building was home to the Għarb Folklore Museum. From Season 2 onwards it has been at the centre of the action, and as the series has progressed it has become ever more central to the story. In the final episode of Season 3 it was revealed as the scene of a double murder and the key to unlocking a centuries-old secret. In Season 4, with Uncle Patrick firmly installed behind the bar, even more drama has unfolded within its walls.

Top Tip: You can visit the outside of La Couronne year-round and it is well worth a stop for fans of the show. It is even marked as a fictional bar on Google Maps!

The Village Square Għarb’s main square is the beating heart of Sainte Victoire, and spending time here is a must for any fan of the show. The exterior of the police station sits on one side of the square. The village bus stop is here too. The very one where we first met Uncle Patrick (Tony Robinson) makes his entrance, and where Jean’s antique dealer friend David (Les Dennis) arrived for his ill-fated honeymoon. The square has also been the scene of some of the most dramatic moments in the show’s history, including a shooting and a hit-and-run.

The Police Station The exterior of Sainte Victoire’s police station moved from Sannat to Għarb from Season 2 onwards. It is a private residence sitting directly opposite La Couronne, so please be respectful when visiting. Apparently the elderly lady who lives there occasionally forgets that filming is taking place and wanders out of her front door mid-scene.

Dining in Għarb

Għarb may be small, but it packs a punch when it comes to dining options. From more casual places that are perfect for a quick pizza, to more refined dining experiences, like Il-Kunvent. Unfortunately, for fans of The Madame Blanc Mysteries, while you can see the sign for La Couronne, it is a fictional bar and not open. It is a great place to take a selfie though!

• Il-Kunvent Restaurant: Situated in the village’s band club, Il-Kunvent serves delicious Mediterranean and Gozitan dishes in an authentic setting. Booking is highly recommended!
  
  
• Rangers Bar & Restaurant: A local favourite for Mediterranean cuisine paired with craft beers and single malts.
  
  
• Grazie Mille Restaurant: Perfect for Italian flavours, offering fresh pasta dishes and wood-fired pizzas.
  
  
• Salvina Restaurant & Lounge Bar: A casual spot for traditional Gozitan dishes and relaxed dining.

How to Get to and Around Għarb, Gozo

Għarb is one of the larger villages, although it is still it easy to explore on foot. However, if you want to venture further afield, there are several transportation options available:

• Bus: Għarb is served by bus routes 311 and 312, connecting it to Victoria (Rabat) and other parts of Gozo.
  
  
• Car rental: Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore Gozo at your own pace. Just remember that driving is on the left side of the road.
  
  
• Taxi services: Apps like Bolt offer convenient ride-hailing services on Gozo.
  
  
• Bicycle: For the more adventurous, renting a bike is a great way to explore Għarb and its beautiful surroundings.
