Is Gozo Worth Visiting?
11/25/20245 min read
In short, yes.
Admittedly, as someone who lives on Gozo and has created an entire website to help others experience this beautiful island, I might be biased. So let me persuade you with something a little more substantial*. With a few exceptions, Gozo has something for almost every kind of holidaymaker you can think of, and let's deal with those exceptions first
How to Get to Gozo?
Getting to Gozo is simple and part of the fun! Honestly, there's nothing quite like arriving on a gorgeous summer's day to the site of Mgarr Harbour.
Boat Tours/Cruises
If you’re only planning a short visit, which is fine but I would recommend spending a few days on Gozo if you can, then consider taking a boat tour or cruise from Malta. These often include visits to both Gozo and nearby Comino Island, making it an efficient way to see the highlights. However, be aware that these tours can sometimes feel a bit rushed.
*If you need something more substantial then please read our 'Ultimate Travel Guide to Gozo'.
Who is Gozo Not For?
If you’re looking for vibrant nightlife or family-friendly, all-inclusive resorts, you are probably better off staying in Malta, particularly around Sliema or St. Julian's if you are interested in partying all night long. Families will find plenty of great hotels and resorts towards the north of the island, around Qawra and St. Paul's Bay.

So, who is Gozo For?
Gozo is often described as Malta’s more relaxed and quaint counterpart—a place where time slows down, allowing you to fully appreciate its natural beauty and rich culture. Whether you’re exploring prehistoric temples, enjoying a sunny beach day, or indulging in local cuisine, Gozo truly has something for everyone.
But don’t mistake 'relaxed and simple' for 'dull and boring.' There is always something happening here. From the annual Christmas Parade and living Nativity, to village feasts throughout the summer, and the lively Opera season in October—when Victoria's two opera houses compete to outdo each other—Gozo offers a vibrant calendar of events. You can also enjoy numerous wine, beer, and food festivals hosted by each village, ensuring there's always something entertaining to see and do. It's very easy to find out what's on when from the Events in Gozo website.
Rich History
If you love history, then Gozo is definitely the place for you. Gozo is home to the impressive Ġgantija Temples, which are arguably the oldest free-standing structures in the world, offering visitors a fascinating glimpse into prehistoric times.
For something a little more modern, you shouldn't miss exploring the Citadel in Victoria (also known as Rabat), inhabited since the Bronze Age and turned into a castle during the Medieval period, it offers panoramic views of the entire island. These ancient landmarks, combined with traditional Maltese architecture found throughout the island's charming villages, make Gozo a history buff’s paradise.
Adventure Opportunities
If it is adventure you're after, Gozo is an outdoor lover's playground. Its clear waters make it one of the best diving destinations in the Mediterranean, with famous spots like the Blue Hole and the remains of the Azure Window to explore. If hiking or rock climbing is more your style, Gozo's diverse terrain provides ample opportunity, from sea cliff paths to rugged coastal trails. Water sports enthusiasts can also enjoy kayaking, parasailing, and exploring hidden sea caves along the coastline.
Tranquil Vibes
One of Gozo's biggest draws is its relaxed atmosphere. Unlike the bustling nightlife found on the main island of Malta, Gozo offers a more tranquil experience. Quieter villages, like Nadur and Sannat, are perfect for those who want to escape the crowds and enjoy peaceful surroundings. Strolling through quaint streets, visiting local churches, or people-watching in the village square are perfect ways to unwind.
Cultural Experiences
Gozo’s vibrant culture is rich with local festivals, traditional music, and warm hospitality. If you happen to visit during the feast season, you’ll be treated to lively processions, fireworks, and delicious local food. Speaking of food, Gozo has a delightful culinary scene—make sure to try the local specialty, ftira, or fresh seafood at a local restaurant. The island’s craft market is a wonderful spot to find handmade lace, pottery, and other Gozitan treasures.
Visit Independently by Taking a Direct Ferry
High Speed Ferry from Valletta
One of the easiest ways to reach Gozo is by taking the High Speed Ferry. Straight from Valletta to Mgarr Harbour, it takes around 45 minutes and is a great option if you’re staying in or around Valletta or towards the south of the island.
Ferry from Cirkewwa
Alternatively, you can take the Gozo Channel ferry from Cirkewwa, located at the northern tip of Malta. This is the larger ferry, capable of transporting cars, and the journey takes about 25 minutes. It’s an affordable and scenic way to begin your Gozo adventure. You really do get the best view of Mgarr Harbour and the village churches of Għajnsielem as the ferry pulls in.
So, Is Gozo Really Worth Visiting?
Have you read the article or just skimmed to the end?
In a word, yes! Whether you’re interested in history, culture, adventure, or simply relaxing, Gozo has something for almost everyone—we even have nightclubs if that’s your thing, just not many (like two, maybe three and one of them closes for winter). This island’s charm lies in its slower pace of life, natural beauty, history, cuisine, culture, and the unique experiences it offers—from diving in azure waters to enjoying sunset views at the Citadel.

Where to Stay on Gozo?
For those planning a longer stay, Victoria is the perfect base. It’s centrally located and has a variety of accommodation options, from boutique hotels to traditional farmhouses. Staying in Victoria also makes it easy to access other parts of the island by bus or car. If you prefer to stay by the sea, Marsalforn or Xlendi are great options with beautiful coastal views and plenty of restaurants. You want more suggestions on where to stay, check out our Gozo village guide.
How to Get Around Gozo?
Gozo is small and easy to get around. Renting a car or scooter is the most convenient way to explore, giving you the freedom to reach more remote areas. Though be warned, some of the roads are not in great shape and there are those that consider driving on Gozo an adrenaline sport.
If you’d rather use public transport, local buses connect all the villages to Victoria, though they usually only run once an hour. For a fun twist, try renting a quad bike or joining an ATV tour to see the island from a different perspective.
How Long to Visit Gozo For?
Is Gozo Worth Visiting for Only a Day?
Absolutely! If you’re pressed for time, a day trip to Gozo will give you a little taste of its beauty and charm. However, there is so much to see. I'd recommend spending at least two or three days here, if not more.
Is Gozo Worth Visiting for More Than a Day?
Yes. Again, I'm biased, but I would recommend staying for at least two days. This way, you can truly immerse yourself in everything Gozo has to offer, from hiking and exploring scenic spots like Ta’ Mixta Cave to visiting secluded bays and enjoying the local culture. It’s also a great way to add some extra beach time into your itinerary for that relaxed vibe. You could even spend some time visiting the filming locations of your favourite movies and TV shows.
