For the first time in the franchise, Enola Holmes leaves London behind. The third instalment in Netflix’s hit mystery series — starring Millie Bobby Brown as Sherlock Holmes’ younger sister — is set and filmed in Malta, making it one of the most significant productions to use the Maltese islands in recent years.

Enola Holmes 3 premieres on Netflix on 1 July 2026. Unlike most productions that use Malta as a stand-in for somewhere else, this one leans into the location: Malta is Malta, and the sun-drenched streets, limestone architecture and Mediterranean coastline are very much part of the story.

For Gozo, the connection is specific: a drone establishing shot filmed on the land behind Dwejra Tower, the 17th-century watchtower that overlooks Dwejra Bay on Gozo’s western coast.

Adventure chases detective Enola Holmes to Malta, where personal and professional dreams collide in a case more tangled and treacherous than any she has faced before. As Enola navigates her most dangerous assignment yet, she is also navigating the next stage of her relationship with Viscount Tewkesbury, and if those first-look images are anything to go by, a wedding may be on the horizon.

Directed by Philip Barantini, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed one-take crime drama Adolescence, and written by returning screenwriter Jack Thorne, the film is described as darker in tone than its predecessors, doing “for the franchise what Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban did for the Harry Potter series.”

Enola Holmes 3 premieres globally on Netflix on 1 July 2026.

Enola Holmes 3 was filmed primarily in Malta, with additional studio work at Shepperton Studios in Surrey, UK. Principal photography began in April 2025 in the UK before the production relocated to Malta for the final weeks of filming. On Gozo, a drone establishing shot was filmed on the headland behind Dwejra Tower at Dwejra Bay.

Yes, a drone establishing shot was filmed on the land behind Dwejra Tower, the 17th-century watchtower overlooking Dwejra Bay on Gozo’s western coast. The shot is believed to be used as an establishing sequence in the film. Dwejra Bay is one of Gozo’s most dramatic coastal locations and has appeared in numerous productions over the decades, including Game of Thrones and Clash of the Titans.

Confirmed Malta filming locations include Valletta. Lead actress Millie Bobby Brown was also spotted filming in Naxxar, and Helena Bonham Carter was seen visiting Popeye Village in Mellieħa during the shoot. Further Malta locations will be confirmed once the film is released on 1 July 2026, this page will be updated as soon as possible.

The principal cast includes Millie Bobby Brown as Enola Holmes, Henry Cavill as Sherlock Holmes, Helena Bonham Carter as their mother Eudoria, Louis Partridge as Viscount Tewkesbury, and Himesh Patel as Dr. John Watson.

The third film is described as the final instalment in the trilogy. Director Philip Barantini and writer Jack Thorne have indicated it brings Enola’s story to a conclusion.

Dwejra Bay sits on Gozo’s western coast, near the village of San Lawrenz. It is one of the most photographed locations on the island — and one of the most filmed.

The establishing drone shot for Enola Holmes 3 was filmed on the headland behind Dwejra Tower, a 17th-century watchtower built by the Knights of St John that stands above the bay. One of the Gozitan extras on set noted that his costume bore a striking resemblance to the clothes his grandfather used to wear — a small detail that speaks to the care taken with the period setting, and to the kind of local knowledge that only comes from actually being there. From this vantage point, the view takes in Dwejra Bay, the open Mediterranean, and — on a clear day — the outline of Malta on the horizon. It is the kind of shot that tells an audience immediately that this is somewhere dramatic and ancient, which is exactly what the production needed.

Dwejra is familiar territory for film crews. The Azure Window — the natural limestone arch that once rose from the bay — appeared in Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans, Coronation Street and dozens of other productions before its collapse in March 2017. The arch is gone, but the landscape retains all of its cinematic quality, and Fungus Rock — the distinctive islet in the bay — remains.

The tower and headland are accessible on foot from the car park at Dwejra Bay. The walk to the headland behind the tower takes around ten minutes from the car park and gives a clear view of the bay and the open sea. The area around the former Azure Window site and the Inland Sea is immediately below.

Top Tip: The headland behind Dwejra Tower offers one of the best sunset views on Gozo. If you want to stand where the drone filmed, head to the rocky ground on the seaward side of the tower and look back towards the bay.

Filming in Malta was not without incident. According to reports, production was temporarily halted in June 2025 when several cast and crew members — including Millie Bobby Brown — fell ill after suspected food poisoning from on-set catering. Filming resumed after a brief pause.

Away from the set, the production generated considerable local interest. Brown was spotted in Naxxar during filming, while Helena Bonham Carter took time off-set to visit Popeye Village in Mellieħa — the purpose-built film set constructed for Robert Altman’s 1980 musical that has become one of Malta’s most visited tourist attractions.

Enola Holmes 3 is the first production in recent memory to set its story in Malta rather than simply use the islands as a stand-in for somewhere else. Valletta, which became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 and served as European Capital of Culture in 2018, provides the backdrop for Enola’s most complex case yet.
